Search results increasingly answer questions, compare options and synthesize sources before a user visits a website. Generic explanation is easier to compress into a result. Distinctive evidence, tools, products, experience and trusted relationships are harder to replace.

This does not create a separate discipline that makes technical SEO irrelevant. Google says that ordinary SEO fundamentals continue to apply to AI features and that there are no special technical requirements for appearing in them. A page still needs to be indexed and eligible for a search-result snippet. Review Google’s current AI features and website guidance.

Understand what changed

Search has long provided direct answers through definitions, calculations, maps, panels and featured snippets. Generative systems expand the range of questions that can be synthesized and the number of sources that can contribute to a response.

The practical changes are:

  • a result may resolve more of an informational task without a click;
  • visibility can include a citation or representation rather than a traditional blue link;
  • a longer, multi-part query can trigger a synthesized response;
  • users may continue a conversation and refine the task;
  • source selection can vary across similar prompts;
  • referral behavior may become less predictable.

Do not reduce this to “traffic is dead.” Commercial, local, navigational, visual, transactional and high-consequence tasks still create visits and direct interactions. The distribution of clicks changes by query and result design.

Separate extractable information from durable value

Every publisher should ask what part of the page can be summarized and what requires the source.

Easy to compress:

  • common definitions;
  • generic lists;
  • repeated explanations;
  • answers with no original evidence;
  • undifferentiated introductions.

Harder to replace:

  • original data with a transparent method;
  • an interactive tool or calculator;
  • a product, transaction or service;
  • first-hand operating experience;
  • a maintained database;
  • detailed comparisons with explicit criteria;
  • community or expert relationships;
  • local availability and real-time information;
  • decisions that require trust, context or accountability.

The objective is not to hide the answer to force a click. Give the direct answer, then provide enough distinctive value for a person to continue when the task requires it.

Make claims easy to verify

Answer systems and human readers need to identify where a claim came from. Improve source quality:

  • name authors and relevant expertise;
  • cite primary evidence near the claim;
  • describe methods, samples and limitations;
  • distinguish observation, inference and opinion;
  • show publication and meaningful update dates;
  • correct errors and record material changes;
  • avoid unsupported numerical precision.

Do not create fake quotations, statistics or references to appear authoritative. Source hygiene is a product feature.

Structure content around tasks

Clear structure improves human use and accurate representation. Use one page purpose, descriptive headings, direct language, tables where comparison helps and lists where sequence matters.

A strong task page often contains:

  1. a direct answer or decision rule;
  2. the conditions and exceptions;
  3. evidence or a worked example;
  4. an action, tool or next step;
  5. links to deeper or primary material.

Avoid fragmenting one coherent answer into many thin pages. Answer engines can combine sources; a publisher should not imitate that fragmentation on its own site.

Use structured data accurately

Structured data can clarify entities and page types when it matches visible content. It does not guarantee inclusion, rankings or citations. Generate it from maintained content fields, validate it and remove markup that describes information users cannot see.

Prioritize stable identity signals: consistent organisation and person names, official profiles, authorship, dates, products and page relationships. Do not add every schema type because it exists.

If search interfaces intermediate more informational journeys, direct relationships become more valuable. Develop:

  • email subscriptions and useful recurring publications;
  • product or community participation;
  • expert relationships and digital PR;
  • partnerships and primary-source citations;
  • tools and resources people bookmark;
  • consistent identity across official channels.

Brand search is not a substitute for non-brand discovery. It is evidence that people remember and seek the source after encountering it elsewhere.

Measure qualified visibility and use

Clicks remain important, but they cannot describe the whole system. Google currently includes traffic from its AI features in Search Console’s Web search type, rather than providing a separate AI-feature report. That limits direct attribution and requires cautious interpretation.

Track several layers:

Search discovery

  • relevant impressions and clicks by page and query group;
  • brand and non-brand demand;
  • landing-page performance;
  • result-feature and device changes where data is available.

Source recognition

  • cited coverage and earned links;
  • brand searches and direct visits;
  • referrals from answer and assistant platforms where identifiable;
  • mentions and quotation accuracy;
  • repeat use of tools or research.

Business outcomes

  • qualified leads, revenue or service completions;
  • subscriptions and returning users;
  • product adoption or activation;
  • assisted journeys;
  • customer evidence about how they discovered and evaluated the source.

A decline in low-value informational clicks can coexist with stronger qualified outcomes. The reverse can also happen. Report both.

Avoid the new optimization theatre

Be sceptical of tactics that promise guaranteed citation through a word count, special file, arbitrary schema or repeated phrase pattern. Test changes against primary guidance, crawlable evidence and actual user value.

Do not create hundreds of superficial question pages for every conversational variation. Modern retrieval systems can understand relationships across language; a coherent, authoritative resource is usually more maintainable.

Do not block important search crawlers impulsively without understanding the effect on discovery and business. Crawler access, model training and user-agent controls are related but not identical policy questions.

Use an answer-readiness review

For an important page, ask:

  • Does the page answer a defined task directly?
  • Is the primary information indexable and rendered reliably?
  • Are material claims attributable?
  • What is original or operationally useful?
  • Are limits and exceptions visible?
  • Can a person identify the responsible author or organisation?
  • Does structured data match the page?
  • Is there a reason to visit, return or build a relationship?
  • Is success measured beyond raw clicks?

Answer-led search raises the cost of publishing material that merely paraphrases the existing web. The durable response is not to write for a machine. It is to create sources with evidence, utility and accountability that both people and systems can represent accurately.
